The Museum of the Resistance in Zonza

A unique place of remembrance

Located in the heart of the village of Zonza, in the Alta Rocca, the Museum of the Corsican Resistance is the only establishment on the island entirely dedicated to the Second World War and Corsican involvement in the Resistance. It highlights a key historical fact: Corsica was the first French territory to be liberated, as early as the end of the Second World War. 9 September 1943without the direct intervention of Allied forces.

Created in 2011 at the instigation of Jean-Noël AïquiThe museum has recently been given a new museography based on the cultural and social history of Corsica. It offers an immersive journey through four themed roomscovering the period from 1938 to 1943.

Visitors can discover :

  • The threats of Italian annexation hanging over the island,
  • The economic and political context of the Vichy regime in Corsica,
  • The realities of the Italian occupation,
  • The organisation of the Resistance, from clandestine networks to the maquis, including the essential role played by women, right up to the early liberation of the island.

The collection brings together 130 historical items and documentsenriched with multimedia support in four languages (French, Corsican, English, Italian), offering an accessible and educational experience for all.

Thanks to a partnership withSintinelle Association and the support of numerous donors, the museum presents rare objects, including the Corsicans on guard" leafletwritten in July 1940 by François-Marie Pietriconsidered to be the first act of resistance on the island.

A committed place of remembrance, paying tribute to the men and women of the Alta Rocca and the whole of Corsica who fought for freedom.
