THE METAMORPHOSES OF THE VAMPIRE

Lecture: The Metamorphoses of the Vampire: From Monster to Seducer, by Jean-Marc Olivesi Arghja at 6.00 pm

Published in 1897, Bram Stoker’s novel *Dracula* defines the characteristics of the vampire: a monster, an agent of evil, opposed to all the values of Victorian England.

How did this monster come to be seen as the archetype of the seducer and the individualistic, free-spirited hero of the 20th century?
We probably have Francis Ford Coppola’s film to thank for that.

Meanwhile, the discovery of psychoanalysis and the unconscious has rendered the concepts of Good and Evil far less relevant: the vampire has become far more interesting and has laid bare our most secret impulses.
The cinema has perfectly illustrated each of these stages.
