Start of the trail
Follow the sky-blue signs down the stairs to the right of the start sign.

Saint Nicolas Church
In the Middle Ages, the church of San Nicolao (1589) was a chapel with a single nave ending in an apse. The church was altered and enlarged so many times that there is now no way of dating it precisely.
The bell tower: it wasn't until 1870 that a bell tower was built on the initiative of the then mayor, Jacques-Alphonse de Peretti. The master builders of this edifice came from Italy and introduced a fashion to Levie: the cloverleaf-shaped openings found on mausoleums from the same period.

Castaldaccia fountain
It wasn't until 1952 that running water could be supplied to the houses. Previously, residents would fetch it from the fountain in summer and winter. Each neighbourhood, "u poghju", had its own fountain, but many have disappeared. The name of this one is derived from "U Casteddu", the fortification. There was a tower here, which has now disappeared.
It may well have inspired the poet, for it is said to have been built in the image of the Castalian fountain at Delphi, at the foot of Mount Parnassus (Greece). Castalie was capable of giving poetic inspiration to anyone who drank from its waters or listened to its quiet murmur.

Alta Rocca Museum
An ancient land of lords, a land of forests and torrents, the Alta Rocca is the historic heart and wild pearl of southern Corsica. Wedged between the high summer pasture plateaux of the Cuscionu, the Bavedda peaks, the Uspedali massif and the Cagna mountains, it is a natural treasure trove, rich in distinctive features and proud of its identity. Located in the centre of the village of Livia (Levie), the Musée de l'Alta Rocca allows visitors and schoolchildren to discover the geological, historical and cultural features of the micro-region, through a gallery displaying remains from archaeological digs and exhibitions devoted to the region's resources and contemporary art.
The Musée de l'Alta Rocca explores daily life in southern Corsica during the great periods of its history:
- MESOLITHIC PERIOD (9000-6000 BC): The first Corsicans
- THE NEOLITHIC PERIOD (6000-2000): Producers and builders
- THE BRONZE AGE (2000-800 BC): Fortifications and warrior-heroes
- THE IRON AGE (800-200 BC): From the rise of villages to the first settlements
- FROM ANTIQUITY TO THE MODERN ERA (200/1700 BC): A tormented history
- THE CONTEMPORARY PERIOD (1700/present) : A rural world

Information
Continue along the same street, passing between the houses.

Fountain of Paradisellu
The story goes that A Stritta di u Pantanu was dug out by a torrential flood. So the little path was made by the water.
6
Information
Continue straight ahead along the dirt path to the fountain.

Levie wash-house
In the villages, along the slopes, the fountains, drinking troughs and this restored wash-house bear witness to ancestral know-how. Water is a common good that we have always managed and shared to turn the mill wheel or water the garden, as here in Pantano. Under your feet, in the curve of the path, you walk on an ancient canal.

Crossing with the road
Take the stairs up to the road and turn right.

Vitalbetu fountain
The Vitalbetu fountain marks the boundary of the Casonu district that you passed on your way up from the village centre. Each poghju (neighbourhood) had its own fountain and washhouse. People used to say of this fountain: "Acqua di Vitalbetu, acqua salutifara. Vitalbetu, vita ha betu" (the water of Vitalbetu, healthy water. Vitalbetu, fulfilled life). Some people interpret its name differently: "Surghjenti Vitalbedda", source of good life...

A Casa di u Diavule
All over the countryside or in the mountains, there are places that refer to the devil or hell. They are always ravines, gorges, dark, inaccessible and sometimes perilous places. But in Levie, you'll find this "devil's house" on a sunny slope, at the entrance to the Casonu district overlooking the whole village... Surprising!
It has to be said that this house was once occupied by a terrible character who used to frighten children. He took it into his head to authorise or refuse access to the village, particularly to people arriving from the upper villages of the Alta Rocca, unless they paid him a right of way. It is even said that he was so mean that he refused to let his brother use one of his walls to build his house. That's why there's an unusual gap between the two buildings.
